When you’re just starting your blog, it seems like there’s a never ending to do list of things to get done. From setting up your site to creating a plan for your content there are many things to think about. One of the most important things to think about when you’re just getting started is your design.
When you think about the ways that a poor brand and blog design can hold you back, it’s a no brainer that most people spend quite a lot of time figuring out what their look will be from day 1. If you have a goal to start your blog sometime in the next couple of months, to help you avoid being held back we’re covering a few reasons getting a professional design is important for your blog’s success.
1. Makes your brand stand out and more trustworthy
One of the major benefits of hiring a designer to get a professional design for your blog is that you’re getting a look that’s totally unique to your blog. This is so beneficial to you because it makes your brand stand out from everyone else obviously because your blog will look different from all of the other sites out there. Having a unique design, especially from day one, can also boost your reputation and make your brand more trustworthy.
Just think about it like this, let’s say you just visited five sites. Four of them had a DIY’d look based off the same free theme, but the last one had a unique, professional design. Which one of these sites would you be most likely to remember? Not only that, but then ask yourself which site would you be most likely to trust the content? It’s probably safe to assume you’d be most likely to trust the last site because it looks the most professional. You don’t want your readers to be turned off not just from your site design but also your content because they’re not sure how trustworthy you are.
2. Establishes a good impression with first time readers
Once you’ve been blogging for a while it may seem like you have the same loyal visitors coming back every time you publish new content to read your posts. However, we see our best growth by reaching out to new readers, and when someone lands on your site for the first time you want them to be excited enough to click around so they can learn more about you and read your content. When you have a professional design, you’re much more likely to hook your first time readers by establishing a great first impression right away.
Let’s take Krista’s site for example. When I talked to her for the first time in 2015, I checked out her site and assumed that she had been around for a long time and that I had just never heard of her. It turned out that she invested in working with a designer to launch her website, and she actually had only recently launched. This was such a surprise to me because the design she had gotten was so professional and well done that I honestly thought she’d been around for at least a few years.
3. Makes it easier to grow your brand long term
One common misconception among bloggers is that they have to start growing their brand before it’s worth it to invest in working with a designer. I’ve worked one-on-one with a lot of bloggers as they’re just getting started, and I can say that’s totally true if you’re just blogging as a hobby. However, if you have a small business or are trying to make money from your blog, having a professional design makes it so much easier to grow your brand as time goes on.
Why is this? Well, it’s pretty simple. Most bloggers choose a design for where they are right in that moment instead of considering where they want to go. That means that often times when they’re wanting to grow their brand, like by adding a shop to their site so they can offer digital products to their readers, they’re often held back from accomplishing that goal because there’s a big step in the way: figuring out how to make their current design accommodate where they want to go. When you get a professional design, you’re much more likely to have a well-rounded site that you can grow into so if / when you have a moment of wanting to try something new, your site is already setup for you to do those things.
